Next week students will be MAP testing on Tuesday and Wednesday. This will be the ELA portion of the test. Please be sure students get a good night's rest and eat a healthy breakfast. Remember breakfast is free now for all students. Also, no cell phones are allowed during testing so be sure to keep them at home on test days or let me know so I can put them away.
After testing, we are beginning our Westward Expansion and Civil War units. This will be a nice change for students since they have been working so hard preparing for MAP testing. For Westward Expansion, students will be grouped in families and they will experience what it was like to travel the Oregon Trail. They will be journal writing about their travels and the challenges they will face. For Civil War, students will focus on the Missouri Compromise and how Missouri was split during this time. April is halfway over so the end is very near.
*Don't forget to register for summer school online if you would like your child to attend this year.

MAP testing begins tomorrow. Students will be taking the Mathematics portion of this year's MAP test in the morning. There are two sessions and students should be finished by lunchtime. Please be sure they get a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast in the morning. Don't forget breakfast is free to all students now. Also, please be sure cell phones stay at home tomorrow. Test security this year does not allow cell phones to be in the classroom even if they are put away in backpacks. Thanks for your help!

Field Day 2016 is right around the corner, May 11th! Coach Ferguson is needing parent volunteers to help with this fun event! Each volunteer is asked to work either a morning or afternoon session (only 1/2 day). Pre-K, K, and 1st graders will have their Field Day in the morning...2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders will have their Field Day in the afternoon. If you volunteer, you are encouraged to work a station opposite of when your child's Field Day is scheduled (i.e., work a morning station (9;15-11:30) if you have a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grader...work an afternoon station (12;45-3:00) if you have a Pre-K, K or 1st grader). This will allow you the opportunity to watch your child's class and help the classroom teacher while they participate in the activities:)
If you are interested in helping run a Field Day station, please contact Coach Ferguson at [email protected] or call 862-6308 ext. 1164. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Report cards will be coming home Monday along with this year's Schoolwide Book Read. You should also be receiving an email from Mrs. Crighton-Smith to clarify some information about the report cards. This week we got back in the swing of things. In reading, we are working on researching a topic then students will create a presentation about their topic. We are focusing on this in writing as well and will be moving our focus to a famous Missourian later in the month. In math, we looked at fractions and finding equivalent fractions using an area model and a number line. Students also used fraction tower manipulatives to help visualize. As a reference please know that there are virtual fraction tiles under our Math page if you need something to help them at home. The nutrition program started this week and in social studies we worked on map skills. As you can see, we were busy...... Have a great weekend!

The next two weeks are going to fly by and students have several assessments to take since we are coming to the end of second quarter. Be watchful for study guides and practice pages coming home in preparation for these tests. Next week we will test over the last three units in math including factors, multiples, long division, multiplication, and word problems with multiple steps. Students will also write an opinion paper from start to finish on their own with a thesis statement which includes their opinion and reasons for it along with supporting evidence. The following week will be our reading assessment over informational text strategies and a science assessment over soil, rocks, and minerals. It's going to be busy, busy....

This week in math we began looking at factors and multiples of numbers. Students struggled a bit with factoring and many do not know their multiplication facts very well. Our math this year will rely heavily on students knowing these facts. Please work with your child to help them memorize these facts. Many students went home with math homework today. Students are finally publishing their narrative writing piece so they will share their pieces with their peers next week. In reading, we continue to focus on characters and what we learn about them through things the character says, does, and actions they take. Ecosystems is our topic in science and we will be looking at a forest, prairie, and pond ecosystems next week.
*If you are able, the class would really appreciate some more snack donations. Several kids are not able to bring a snack each day and unfortunately I can not provide for them all. Thanks for any help!

FUNDRAISER PACKETS WERE SENT HOME TODAY!
Be sure to check for these packets and the parent letter today in your child's backpack. Also, there is a permission slip for our Jefferson City trip coming up October 8th. Please return the slips by the 2nd of October so we can finalize lunch plans and transportation.
We did not take our math test today so students could have some more time to practice these skills over the weekend. I sent home a packet to help them study for the test. Please have them work on the problems they are still struggling with so they can be prepared on Monday. I do not expect them to complete each problem in the packet. This is not meant to be a chore just a resource to study and practice some more. Thanks for your help! Have a great weekend!

Last week we finished our study of government in social studies so this week we will switch to science and look at the scientific method before we move into ecosystems. We will wrap up our unit over place value in math and students will take an assessment over these concepts on Friday. In reading we will be looking more closely at characters and how our theories about characters can support our understanding of the text. Students have been drafting their narratives in writing so we will be working on their leads and endings this week. Also, we will be looking at run-on and fragmented sentences to help us during our editing process.
*Don't forget Picture Day is Thursday and the fundraiser packets will come home Friday.

Last week was full of new learning opportunities. We began looking at number forms such as standard, word form, and expanded form in math. We continue to look at inferring and retelling about the story in reading. Students will begin writing their personal narratives this week. We are learning about the three branches of government in social studies.
This will be a short week since students are out of school Friday and Monday. Also, Tuesday the 1st is our first HAT DAY for the school year. Please send a canned good or boxed meal for the food pantry and wear a hat!
Also, we have set a date for our Jefferson City field trip. We will be visiting the capital on Thursday, October 8th. More information will be coming home in a few weeks but we will need parent volunteers so make plans to join us if you can.

We made it through our first full week! It was a good week in fourth grade. We are establishing routines and working on choosing a good spot for learning. Next week, we will be very busy diving into our curriculum. In math, we will begin place value. Reading will focus on retelling the story and inferring what the author doesn't tell us in the story. Students will begin developing ideas and characters for their narrative writing and we will continue our study of government in social studies. Wow! That's a lot! Students need may need some extra sleep this weekend. Enjoy this weather!
Just a note about morning snack. I do allow students to have a snack between our reading and math time in the morning. Please try to send something healthy and we are happy to have donations since not all kids can bring one each day. Thanks!

Dear Parents,
Report cards went home this week. Remember you can log into MasteryConnect to view your child's reports and assessments at any time. This will give you more detailed information. Also, I wanted to let you know that the first Language Arts listed on the report card represents their writing and language skills mastered and the second one is their reading.
Also, I wanted to thank those that continue to encourage reading at home. It really can impact your child's reading level. I will continue to ask that students read 120 minutes each week. In math, we are working with multiplication and division. If your child has not mastered their multiplication facts yet, please help them to practice at home. It will make things much easier for them in the coming weeks. Thanks for all your support and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
*The social studies tracker only had one assessment reported which was over one standard. Please do not be concerned if your child's tracker was all red.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Berry

Students have been working with fractions for the last several weeks. They know how to find equivalent fractions and how to compare fractions. We will test over these skills next week on Wednesday. I'm sending home practice pages for students to do over the weekend so please make sure your child works on this skill. In reading, we are looking at finding the main idea and supporting details in nonfiction books and we are still writing an opinion essay. Students will be creating a soil scroll in the next week showing the different layers that are found in soil. Lastly, please make sure your child is reading their 120 minutes per week. This is the only homework I require each week so please encourage your child to get their minutes completed. Thank you for your help!

Wow! The last two weeks have been extremely busy.... Just wanted to thank you for coming in to meet with me and discuss your child's progress in 4th grade. It was nice to visit with everyone. Tomorrow is the Fall Party at 2:45 so please feel free to join us for all the fun. Remember students are out of school Monday and Tuesday next week. Our Veteran's Assembly is Friday, November 7th at 2:30. Picture retakes have been rescheduled for Wednesday, November 12th since we have not received the first prints yet. We should have them today or tomorrow hopefully.
We are into fractions now and finding ways to determine equivalent fractions. Any practice at home would be greatly appreciated. Show them how fractions are used in the kitchen for cooking or in the shop for building things. Also, remember this page has a link to Math activities that your child can use to practice different skills. In reading, we are looking at nonfiction texts and in writing, we are coming up with our thesis statement for our opinion writing. We continue looking at rocks and minerals in science. Please remember reading logs are due on Fridays and students should be reading 120 minutes per week. Thanks for all you do at home for your student's progress!
We are out of snacks in the classroom so we would appreciate any donations!

READING LOGS are coming home! Students should be bringing their reading logs home tonight for the first time. We went over the expectations today and made notes on the inside cover for reference. Students will need to bring this log back and forth to school just like they do their daily agenda. They will record their reading time in the classroom and at home. I will be checking their logs on Fridays and they are expected to read 120 minutes at home during the week. Please initial their logs on Thursday nights so that I know you have seen their log. If they do not get their minutes in during the week, they will be sent to study hall at recess time to read and if it continues I will be contacting you to come up with a plan to help them meet their goal. I will check their logs beginning next Friday, September 19th. Thanks for your help to support their reading efforts!

It's been a busy week! We are getting into the routine of things. Students completed their daily agendas every day this week and were stamped for good behavior or a note was written for things they may have struggled with. Please use this agenda to communicate with me as needed. Also, I have supplied animal crackers this week as a snack in the morning. I may have enough to get through next week but I do not plan to provide snacks all year. If you would like to donate snacks for the classroom I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, feel free to send a snack with your child. I just ask that it be healthy such as fruit, crackers, string cheese, pretzels, granola bars, etc. Please no cookies, candy bars, or other high sugary snacks. Thanks, Mrs. Berry

Well this turned out to be a short week! Thanks for being supportive and helping to encourage your child to read and fill out their reading logs. I am pleased to see them enjoying good books outside of the classroom. Our Valentine's Day party is next Thursday, the 13th at 2:30. Please be sure your child has a box to collect their valentine cards and they need to bring it on the day of the party(please not before). Also, I sent home a class list so please make sure your child fills out a card for every student on the list. Next Friday the 14th is a half day. Have a great weekend!

We have been busy, busy this week. Students are reading historical fiction books, researching the Civil War, mastering fractions, and so on. I just wanted to let you know that I sent home a note along with their new reading logs today. Please take time to read the note and discuss it with your child. The students took their Unit 4 test over adding and subtracting fractions on Thursday so I will be grading and entering those into MasteryConnect over the weekend. I will try to send out another email with the link to your child's tracker by Tuesday. Have a great weekend!
*Remember we are IN school Monday to makeup for a snow day!

When we return from break, all students will have a Chromebook to use in our class. I would really like for all students to have their own ear buds to use for listening instead of headphones if at all possible. Please, if you are able, purchase a pair of ear buds for your child.
Also, there are a few things we could use in the classroom if you are able to help out
I just want to thank the parents for throwing a wonderful Christmas Party on Thursday. The students really enjoyed it and so did I. I'd like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and I hope you enjoy your time with family and friends. See you in January!

Next week is a short week but it will be a busy two days. Students have a math practice sheet to work on this weekend to help them prepare for our Post-Formative Test over fractions. Please take some time to go over this practice with your child. We will review Monday then test on Tuesday. This will let you know which standards the student has not mastered. We will doing a Progress Monitoring for reading at the beginning of December. If I have a concern at that time, I will contact you. Also, the November Tiger Pride Assembly is Tuesday at 2:30. I will let you know Monday if your child is receiving an award.

This week students were given their first spelling list. I am trying something different this year in order to provide a more individualized list for each student. Each week the students' words will come from their own writing. I will look for words they have misspelled in their daily writing and then they can work to master these words. I'm hoping this will help them to apply their spelling skills better while writing. Again this is new for me too so we will see how it goes and adjust if needed.
Also, I would like to thank those that have sent in donations for our classroom. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Each day students are given a chance to have a snack and I would like to keep some snacks on hand for those that do not have one. If you are able to send any of the following snacks in, we would love it!

What a day!
Today was a great first day in fourth grade! This class is going to make my first year at Willard South very memorable and I can't wait to see what we accomplish this year. I forgot to tell students they can bring a healthy snack for in the morning since we have a late lunch time. They may begin doing this next week. Hopefully, their agendas were signed this evening so they can start earning some good time tickets.
